Jazz dance is a form of dance commonly used in Broadway shows and movies. Jazz is a more contemporary kind of dance as compared to ballet, in jazz dancing the movements are big and exaggerated and there is usually an attitude the dancer conveys to the audience. The essence of jazz dance is entertainment.
Our teachers have studied with the very best themselves (see their profiles on the SPAA Staff Page), so they're well equipped to teach your children the finer points of stage presence and performance technique.
Lyrical Jazz and Traditional Jazz are great compliments to any serious ballet students' training once they reach the intermediate level.
We offer three levels of Jazz (listed from Beginning to Advanced):
Jazz C (ages 5 1/2 to 10 years)
Tap/Jazz C Combo (ages 5 1/2 to 10 years)
Jazz B (ages 9 years and up)
Jazz A (ages 12 years and up)
Lyrical Jazz (Students Ballet Level VI and up)
We strongly suggest that all serious dancers with dreams of a career and dancers placed in a Jazz A or B class also enroll in a ballet class. Ballet technique is the foundation of all dance and strong ballet technique equals even stronger jazz technique.
Please refer to our schedule for class times and consult with a staff member for proper class placement. The age range is listed to assist faculty in the placement of new students. After their first trial class, students are placed in a Jazz or Hip Hop level based on their technique and dance experience.
For Students younger than 5 1/2 years old, we suggest a Creative Movement/Dance Foundations Class. This class provides an excellent introduction to dance and focuses on coordination, rhythm, creative movement and Pre-Ballet, all while having fun and cultivating a love for dance in a nurturing and fun-filled environment. This class develops vital motor skills, necessary for success in any dance technique.
